Overcoming Old Odds
Movies are beloved by all, but many with reading disabilities find them especially engaging as an escape through visual media that may be easier to process than the written word. It makes sense, then, that according to ABC News, one of America’s most prominent directors is dyslexic: Steven Spielberg! The director of classics from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial to Jaws to the Indiana Jones movies, he used filmmaking as an escape from a world that didn’t understand him, as dyslexia wasn’t identified when he was a child.
A similar plight was encountered by Whoopi Goldberg, whose childhood was spent facing stigma from adults and peers alike because she couldn’t read and write at the same speed as others. This was all in the absence of any kind of tutoring center, like ours serving Wall Township, to assist her with her dyslexia. However, that didn’t stop her from achieving meteoric success in films such as Ghost, Sister Act, and The Lion King. She now has a range of entertainment awards, including an Academy Award, and actually got her big break from Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple. Thanks to encouragement from her mother and a helpful support system, she was able to persevere.
An Excellent Team to Conquer the Caribbean
World-renowned actress Keira Knightley was diagnosed with dyslexia when she was six, but was so devoted to her acting that she pledged to study every day so her parents would allow her to have an agent. She and Orlando Bloom, who is also dyslexic, starred in the Pirates of the Caribbean films together, with no indication that reading is a struggle for them in the least.
People with dyslexia are unstoppable, as they understand the value of hard work and education.
